What Is a Jellyfish Lamp?
The Jellyfish® lamps are light shades made out of natural materials from the region of the Yucatan's peninsula. Regional gourds (Langerina Sicecaria) and local jicaras(Crescentia cujete) are combined with seeds, seashells, stainglass and blown glass to make beautiful lamps. The designs are inspired by the local nature, and combined with the colored hand-blown glass and stainglass that reflect the designs and colors on the wall, remind you of those warm amazing days you spent in the magical city of Playa del Carmen.
The lamps and Bobble heads are made locally by Mayan artisans trained by the founders of Jellyfish® Daniel Rodall who takes care of the Workshop production. and Fernanda Aguilera who has the artistic eye and imagination to create the different designs on the lamps, and the diferent animals for the bobble heads. together as a young coulple they started Jellyfish in 2004.
Making and creating diferent designs that you see now in the lamps and Bobble Heads, that are made in the Jellyfish Workshop.
On the lamps it takes 4 years of training to become a Master Crafter and be able to make incrustations of setainglass. They start from the bottom, by making the hanging parts. They drill the seeds and the shells and make the strings that hang from the bottom, from there they see in which area they want to specialize, and have more aptitude for. They can be Master Crafter and drill and make glass incrustations, specialize in barnishing and finishing, or be a designer. There is one workshop in Playa del Carmen, and other three in the nearby Mayan villages. Jellyfish helps young gifted Mexicans find and develop a career, and learn an art that can help then achieve their dreams and be passed on to their children.
